Taiwanese tech tycoon HTC was circulating in the rumors since quite sometime as it was teasing to launch a smartphone with a 64 bit processor. Now, at the IFA tech show the handset dubbed HTC Desire 820 has gone official. It carries the credit of being the first Android based 64 bit smartphone. Being the sequel to Desire 816 launched earlier this year, the Desire 820 has borrowed many aspects from its predecessor.
Starting off with its processor that is its highlight, the Desire 820 employs a 64 bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset that uses an enhanced ARNv8 architecture instead of the dated ARMv8 architecture. This chipset uses two clusters of Cortex A53 quad-core processors that result in 8 cores altogether.
The catch is that the upcoming Android L will only support 64 bit computing and till commercial release of this iteration there will be only limited performance benefits to the users. However, even on the 32 bit computing the Desire 820 will render better efficiency and performance enhancements.
The handset is based on Android 4.4 KitKat operating system topped with HTC Sense UI. It is also assured by the vendor that the phone will receive the Android L update that is expected to be made available this fall. Otherwise, the handset is similar t the Desire 816 with a 5.5 inch HD display carrying 1280×720 pixel resolutions. There is 2 GB of RAM capacity and 16 GB of internal storage capacity along with support for expandable storage.
The camera department comprises of a 13 MP primary snapper teamed up with LED flash, f/2.2 aperture, BSI sensor, 28 mm lens and FHD 1080p video capturing ability. Also, there is an 8 MP front-facer onboard that is responsible for making FHD 1080p video conferencing and for clicking attractive self portrait snaps. Other goodies onboard the Desire 820 include a 2,600 mAh battery and connectivity aspects such as 4G LTE, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS.
Furthermore, the HTC Desire 820 is similar to the other HTC smartphones as it comes with dual front-facing BoomSound speakers. The firm will roll out the single SIM or dual SIM variants of the smartphone depending on the market. Also, the device is available in different color options – Marble White, Tuxedo Grey, Santorini White, Milky-way Grey, Tangerine White, Saffron Grey, Flamingo Grey, Blue Mist, and Monarch Orange. The vendor will also release the Dot View covers for the Desire 820 soon as the handset will go on sale this month itself.
