Japanese tech vendor Sony is pretty popular for its portfolio of water proof smartphones, the trend that it started with the Xperia Z lineup of handsets launched in early 2013. Since then, the USP of any high-end Sony device was the water proof build with the IP ingress protection certifications.

Lately, with the launch of the Xperia M2 Aqua Sony appeared to have come up with a mid-range smartphone with such rugged characteristics. The handset carries the credit of being the first mid-ranger that features IP65 and IP68 ingress protection ratings that make the device dust proof and water resistant even when submerged under water for up to 30 minutes. This build makes the Xperia M2 Aqua the most water proof device in the market for now.

According to the industry insiders, the Japanese tech tycoon will not stop with this smartphone alone. The vendor is planning to make waterproof capabilities a default feature even in the mid-range offerings. These characteristics can be seen in those mid-range smartphones that will be coming out of the Sony factories in 2015, claims a DigiTimes report.

It goes on stating that some Sony ODM (original design manufacturing) production partners such as Compal Electronics, FIH Mobile and Arima Communications have been involved in prepping reference designs for such mid-range smarphones that will not be scared of water. Also, to stay ahead in the competition, it appears like the other smartphone manufacturers including Samsung, Lenovo, HTC and Coolpad will follow the footsteps of Sony in adding water proof capabilities to their mid-range offerings, notes the report.

Moreover, it has been predicted by the industry experts that the ratio of waterproof smartphones to the total smartphone shipments will shoot up by 20 percent to 30 percent in the next couple of years. Of course, this is possible only when the mid-rangers arrive with such rugged characteristics as this will quench the water proof smartphone needs of those price conscious consumers who cannot afford paying heavy amount to purchase high-end flagship models.
